Martin Leads Women’s Track & Field at NEWMAC Championship, Named Field Athlete of the Year

South Hadley, Mass. – April 26, 2014 - Amanda Martin (Bristol, Conn.) was a double-event winner to lead the Springfield College women’s track & field team at Saturday’s New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship at Mount Holyoke College.

The junior swept both the triple jump and the long jump to lead Springfield, which finished fifth as a team with 70 points. Martin won the triple jump with a leap of 36-03 and took first in the long jump with a jump of 17-02.25, for her second-straight long jump title. Martin was named the NEWMAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Year after her strong performance on Saturday.

MIT won the NEWMAC team title with 224.333 points, Wheaton finished second with 149.333 points while WPI (100.833), Coast Guard (74.5) and Springfield (70) rounded out the top five.

Gabriella Gaudreault (Leominster, Mass.) was the Pride’s only other event winner, easily taking first in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:14.75. Her time broke the NEWMAC record by nearly two seconds. The old record of 2:16.26 was held since 2008 by Springfield’s Lacey Cartier.

Gaudreault also took sixth place in the 1500m run with a time of 4:51.39 while teammate Abigail Wright (Pittsfield, Mass.) finished eighth in the event in 4:57.70.

With their events wins, Martin and Gaudreault were named to the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team.

Abby Clark (Holderness, N.H.) took fourth place in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.57 and eighth in the 400 hurdles (1:11.05). Teammate Colleen Rice (Queensbury, N.Y.) took seventh in the 400 hurdles (1:10.14). Dina Pitsas (Milford, N.H.) finished sixth in the 400m with a time of 1:01.79.

Springfield’s 4×400 relay team of Rice, Pitsas, Gaudreault and Samantha Pomroy (Lebanon, Maine) placed third with a time of 4:04.40. The 4×100 relay team of Rice, Darian Dailey (East Providence, R.I.), Elizabeth Saia (Wallingford, Conn.) and Erin Womboldt (Falmouth, Mass.) ran to a fourth place finish with a combined time of 51.18, finishing just .01 seconds behind the third place team from Smith College.

Individually, Dailey also placed third in the long jump (17-00) while Rachel Kaliff took eighth overall in the triple jump (32-05). Springfield took fifth and sixth in the discus as Lauren Dumaine (California, Ky.) took fifth (105-07) and Carly Markos (Wallkill, N.Y.) took sixth (105-02).
