Springfield, Mass. - May 3, 2014 - Springfield College's Gabriella Gaudreault (Leominster, Mass.) won the 800-meter championship on Saturday at the New England Division III Track and Field Championships.
Last year, the senior finished second in the event, but this year, she won by more than a full second. Gaudreault beat the field of 17 runners with a time of 2:13.18 to earn All-New England honors. Teammate Amanda Martin (Bristol, Conn.) earned her second regional honor in as many days, finishing seventh in the triple jump (36-06.25).
Springfield's 4x400 relay team of Dina Pitsas (Milford, N.H.), Samantha Pomroy (Lebanon, Maine), Fatoumata Samura (Bronx, N.Y.) and Gaudreault earned All-New England honors with a sixth place finish in a field of 19 teams. They ran a combined time of 4:01.73.
As a team, Springfield finished 15th overall with 20 points. MIT won the championship with 132 points, Williams finished second with 85 points and Tufts took third with 50 points. Middlebury (47) and Bates (45) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Also running well for Springfield was Pomroy who took 12th in the 800 meter with a time of 2:21.32. Springfield's 4x800 relay team of Abby Clark (Holderness, N.H.), Abigail Wright (Pittsfield, Mass.), Stephanie Williams (Simsbury, Conn.) and Elizabeth Beauregard (West Newbury, Mass.) took 11th place in the event with a combined time of 10:18.78.
The Pride's 4x100 relay team of Erin Womboldt (Falmouth, Mass.), Colleen Rice (Queensbury, N.Y.), Darian Dailey (East Providence, R.I.) and Katherine Saia (Wallingford, Conn.) placed 14th overall with a time of 50.69.
Individually, Clark and Womboldt both ran in the preliminary round of the 100 hurdles. Clark finished 12th (15.64) and Womboldt finished 24th (16.35). Wright placed 17th overall in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:49.97 while Pitsas finished 20th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:00.91.
