Amherst, Mass. - October 14, 2019 - The Springfield College women's soccer program dropped a non-conference match 2-0 to Amherst College on Monday afternoon at Hitchcock Field.
The Pride snap a five-game winning streak and have an overall record of 9-3-1. The Mammoths improve to 7-3-1 on the season.
For much of the first half, the Amherst attack remained aggressive, but could not capitalize on their opportunities. The Pride defense made it difficult to score, with the play of Bridget O'Connor (Hanover, Mass.), who collected eight saves on the game. In the 42nd-minute, the Mammoths were awarded a corner kick that Sophia Fikke sent into the box just over the heads of the Springfield front. Natalie Landau would finish off the feed for the 1-0 Amherst lead.
Early in the second half, the Mammoths remained to control possession of the game. At 48:45, Fikke would now find herself on the scoring end of a pass from Sara Sullivan to enhance the Amherst lead to 2-0.
Springfield would look to close the gap in the 61st minute with a shot attempt from Maggie Barden (Swampscott, Mass.), but it was turned away by Erica Sanders, allowing the Mammoths to hold on for the 2-0 victory.
Springfield will return to NEMWAC play Wednesday when they host Babson College at 3:45 pm.
