Springfield, Mass. - September 4, 2019 - The Springfield College women's soccer team took on the cross town rival Western New England on Wednesday night at Brock-Affleck Field and pulled out a 1-0 non-conference victory.
The Pride picked up a win in its home opener improve to 2-0, while the Golden Bears dropped to 1-1.
Springfield held a 30-5 advantage in shots for the game, registering 12 total shots on goal. Emma O'Sullivan (Westford, Mass.) earned the win in goal for Springfield, while Alex Lemekha made 11 stops in the setback for the visitors.
The Pride broke into the scoring in the 25th minute when Heather Jennato (Hooksett, N.H.) found Kaleigh Dale (Manchester, Conn.) on a restart. The sophomore made no mistake as she drilled a shot into the lower corner for her second game-winning goal of the season.
Western New England had its best scoring opportunity as the first half came to a close. In an unsettled situation in transition, Christina Sordi was able to get the ball past a charging O'Sullivan, but first-year Hannah Sullivan (Manchester, Conn.) beat the ball to the net to keep the visitors off the board.
In a scoreless second half, the Pride controlled the ball in it offensive end for a majority of the action, recording 17 shots and five corner kicks.
Springfield will play Endicott this upcoming Saturday, with kickoff set for 3 pm.
