Women's Soccer Clips Roger Williams, 2-1, In Double Overtime

Bristol, R.I. - August 30, 2019 - The Springfield College women's soccer team benefited from a game-winning goal off a penalty kick by Kaleigh Dale (Mansfield, Conn.) with 1:48 left in double overtime as it prevailed over Roger Williams, 2-1, on Friday afternoon.

The Pride picked up a win in its season opener for the fourth-straight year to improve to 1-0, while the Hawks dropped to 1-0.

Springfield held a 23-5 advantage in shots for the game, while the Hawks took eight of the afternoon's 10 corner kicks.  Bridget O'Connor (Hanover, Mass.) earned the win in goal for Springfield, while Morgan Strassburg made 10 stops in the setback for the hosts.

Following a scoreless first half, Sara Swetland (Manchester, N.H.) struck for the game's first goal in the 53rd minute. Dale brought up the ball from the left side of the field and blistered a shot at Strassburg who blocked it out of the way.  However, Swetland collected the rebound and slotted home a shot into the left corner of the net. The Hawks would even the contest at the 71-minute mark on just their fourth shot of the game on an unassisted marker by Lexi Larson.

Neither team would be able to score during the remainder of regulation or in the first overtime session, setting up Dale's last-minute heroics.  After being fouled in the box and awarded a penalty kick in the 108th minute, Dale stepped up and calmly buried the fifth-game winning goal of her young career.  Dale, who was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Rookie of the Year a season ago, is coming off a rookie campaign in which she set a program record for goals in a season with 20.

Springfield will return home to start a four-game homestand which begins on Wednesday evening against crosstown-rival Western New England.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7 pm.
