Springfield, Mass. - February 10, 2018 - Playing their final regular-season contest in Blake Arena, the Springfield College women's basketball team fell to Babson, 55-48, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Pride is now 17-8 overall with a 11-4 mark against league opponents, while Babson improves to 16-8 on the year with a 12-3 mark in NEWMAC play. The Pride, which owned a 43-36 advantage on the boards, shot 17-for-64 (26.6%) in the seback, while Babson was 20-for-48 (41.7%) from the floor.
The Pride was led by junior forward Gracie Restituyo (Barrington, R.I.), who notched 13 points and 13 rebounds for her 11th double double of the season, while Heather King (Lebanon, N.H.) registered 10 points and nine rebounds in the setback. Babson was led by Tea Spellacy (Belchertown, Mass.), who had 20 points and three rebounds, while Payton Ouimette (Medfield, Mass.) also collected 14 points to go with 10 rebounds.
The Beavers jumped out to a 7-4 lead at the 4:53 mark of the first quarter after an offensive rebound and put-back lay-up from Payton Ouimette (Medfield, Mass.), before the Pride evened the score on a three-pointer from Lauren Rudolph (Franklin, Mass.), making it 7-7 at the 4:27 mark. From there, Babson would go on a 7-0 run, capped by Katherine Tamulionis (Foxboro, Mass.) jumper to make it 14-7, but the Pride would pull even with 30 seconds left as King pulled in an offensive board and hit the lay-up to make it 14-14. Spellacy ended the frame with a three-pointer at the 4 second mark, making it 17-14 Babson at the end of one.
After a lay-up from Vanessa Onwe (Tarrytown, N.Y.) made it 24-19, Babson, Restituyo would keep the Pride within four with a free-throw, but the Beavers answered with a 12-0 run, finished off by an Elizabeth Lane (Skaneateles, N.Y.) three-pointer, to make it 36-20. Springfield College would cut its deficit back to 11 on a jumper from King, but Babson finished the half with back-to-back baskets from Jacqueline Jozefick (Milford, Conn.) and Spellacy to take a 40-25 advantage into the locker room.
Springfield College opened the second half on a 9-2 run to pull the Pride back to within five following a three-pointer from Alex Goslin (South Windsor, Conn.) at the 4:15 mark, before a pair of free-throws from Spellacy pushed Babson's lead back to nine. From there, Restituyo and King would both convert lay-ups to make it 46-41, Springfield College, after three quarters.
Rudolph canned a three with 6:27 to play to cut the Pride's deficit to three, making it 49-46, but with 1:30 to go, Bianca Tomassini (North Branford, Conn.) came off the bench and drilled a corner three to make it a four-point, 52-48, game. A pair of fouls from the Pride helped Babson obtain a six-point lead following two free throws from Spellacy, before the junior sealed the win with one more free-throw with 28 seconds on the clock.
Up next, Springfield College will close out the regular season on Satuday, February 17, as the Pride will travel to Wheaton for a 1 p.m. contest.
