Cambridge, Mass. - January 9, 2017 - Behind 19 points from junior guard Chelsea McAllister (Baltimore, Vt.) and double double from Gracie Restituyo (Barrington, R.I.), the Springfield College women's basketball team defeated MIT, 61-52, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday evening in the Rockwell Cage.
With the win, Springfield College improves to 11-3 on the year and 5-1 in league play, as the Pride has now won nine of its last 10 games. MIT falls to 9-5 on the year and 4-3 against conference opponents. The Pride continued to shoot well as it finished 25-of-53 (47.2%) from the field, while Springfield College's defense held the Engineers to just 22-of-61 (36.1%) shooting on the night.
Along with 19 points, including 13 in the second half, from McAllister, Restituyo notched her fifth double double of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds, while Emily Jacques (Auburn, Maine) recorded a career-best 15 points, while also contributing four rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocks in the win. MIT was led by Dolly Yuan (San Jose, Calif.), who posted 16 points, while Taylor V'Dovec (Blaine, Wash.) and Kara Holinski (Livonia, Mich.) tallied 14 points apiece for the Engineers.
Following a jumper from Holinski at the 6:11 mark of the first quarter, which gave MIT a 7-4 lead, Jacques converted a jumper before Heather King (Lebanon, N.H.) gave the Pride an 8-7 lead with 4:19 to play in the frame after dropping in a lay-up. Up 11-10 following a triple from Jacques, the sophomore guard made another jumper to make it 13-10, Pride, before Yuan converted two free throws to keep the Engineers within one with 30 seconds on the clock. On its last possession, Taylor Hall (Tolland, Conn.) made a jumper to give Springfield College a 15-12 lead at the end of one.
Trailing 18-17 with 6:43 left in the half following a jumper from V'Dovec, McAllister answered with a three-pointer and Restituyo followed with a lay-up to give the Pride a 22-18 lead at the 5:19 mark. Up 26-22 with 2:00 to play in the second quarter, Restituyo hit another lay-up to give the Pride a six-point lead, before Holinski knocked down a triple to pull the Engineers back to within three with less than a minute to play. As time winded down in the frame, McAllister would knock down her second three-pointer of the half to give the Pride a 31-25 lead heading into the break.
Back-to-back lay-ups from McAllister and Restituyo opened up a 12-point, 39-27 lead over the Engineers, but an 8-2 run from MIT, capped by a three-from Holinski with 1:26 on the clock, pulled the hosts to within six. Now up six with 55 seconds to play in the third, Lauren Rudolph (Franklin, Mass.) hit her lone three-pointer of the game to make it 46-37 Pride at the end of three.
V'Dovec would make a lay-up to pull the Engineers to within two, now trailing 46-44, with 7:55 to play, but a lay-up from McAllister with 5:02 on the clock pushed the Pride's lead back to six, up 50-44. With less than a minute to play, McAllister caught the ball on the wing and pulled up for a jumper to give the Pride a 54-50 lead, before the junior and Jacques sealed the game from the free-throw line.
Up next, Springfield College will return to Blake Arena on Thursday, January 11 as the Pride will take on Smith College in NEWMAC play at 1 p.m.
