Worcester, Mass. - December 9, 2017 - Behind a double-double performance from Gracie Restituyo (Barrington, R.I.) and a great defensive effort from the Pride, the Springfield College women's basketball team earned a 56-45 non-conference victory over Worcester State on Saturday afternoon at the Lancer Gymnasium.
With the win, the Pride has now picked up its fourth-consecutive victory, as Springfield College is now 6-2 on the year. With the loss, Worcester State falls to 5-4 on the year. The maroon, which shot 18-of-54 (33.3%) from the field, held a 48-36 advantage on the glass, while the Pride's defense held the Lancers to a 23.8 percent shooting percentage, converting 18 of its 63 chances over 40 minutes of play.
Along with her 17 points, Restituyo pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Alex Goslin (South Windsor, Conn.) had 15 points to go along with seven boards and five assists in the victory. Additionally, Chelsea McAllister (Baltimore, Vt.) reached double digits in the scoring column, as the junior notched 10 points and four rebounds.
Worcester State was led by 12 points off the bench from Brianna Hackett (Hollis, N.H.), while Britt Herring (West Brookfield, Mass.) and Kate Suprenant (Pelham, N.H.) had 11 points apiece.
Springfield College jumped out to an early 7-4 lead in the first 3:26 as Heather King (Lebanon, N.H.) converted a pair of jump shots to go along with a three-pointer from McAllister. Holding a 9-6 lead midway through the period following a lay-up from Restituyo, Springfield College would extend its lead to six on a basket from Goslin with 2:09 to play in the first. With 40 second left, Worcester State made it a three-point game when Herring converted a lay-up, making it 13-10, Pride.
Entering the second quarter, Worcester State took a 14-13 lead following a jumper from Sam Maglione (Lancaster, Mass.) just 2:53 in, before the Pride wrestled back its lead when Lauren Rudolph (Franklin, Mass.) converted a lay-up, and Restituyo hit two free throws to make it 17-14, Pride, with 5:48 on the clock. Tied at 19 in the late stages of the first half, Goslin came up with a defensive board and hit a jumper in transition, before Rudolph countered a Lancers' three with one of her own to sent the Pride into the locker room with a 24-22 lead.
Four-consecutive points for Restituyo to begin the second half gave the Pride a 29-24 lead before Goslin hit two more free throws to extend Springfield College's lead to seven just 1:47 into the third quarter. From there, Worcester State would make it a three-point game following a basket from Suprenant with 7:06 on the clock, before more free throws from Goslin, followed by a three-pointer from McAllister gave the Pride a 36-28 midway through the stanza. Clinging to its eight-point lead late in the third, Kaitlyn Berkel (Waterford, Conn.) hit a free-throw to pull the Lancers to within seven, but Springfield College led 40-33 heading to the fourth.
King's lay-up with 7:20 to play made it 46-37, Pride, which gave Springfield College a lead that it would hold until Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) hit a free throw with 4:23 to play to make it a seven-point game. King pushed it back to nine with a basket of her own with 2:37 to play, before free throws from Goslin, Restituyo and McAllister sealed the win for the Pride.
Next, Springfield College will return to Blake Arena for its final game of the first semester when the Pride will host Westfield State on Friday, December 15 at 7 p.m.
