New London, Conn. - November 29, 2017 - Three student-athletes reached double digits in the scoring column to help lead the Springfield College women's basketball to a 64-53 win over Coast Guard in the Pride's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season opener on Wednesday night.
With the win, Springfield College is now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Bears drop to 1-3 on the year and 0-1 against conference opponents. Springfield College shot 25-of-67 (37.3%) from the field over 40 minutes of play, while Coast Guard was 20-of-59 (33.9%) from the floor in the setback. The Pride owned a 47-37 advantage on the glass, while it also assisted on 18 of its 25 field goals in the victory.
Senior forward Heather King (Lebanon, N.H.) led the way for Springfield College with her fifth-career double double, totaling 18 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore guard Emily Jacques (Auburn, Maine) notched 11 points to go along with three rebounds and three blocks. Junior guard Chelsea McAllister (Balitmore, Vt.) also contributed 10 points, six boards and six assists, while also going 6-for-7 from the free-throw line, while sophomore point guard Alex Goslin (South Windsor, Conn.) pieced together a performance consisting of nine points, eight assists and five rebounds.
Coast Guard was led by a combined 27 points from Micaela Martinelli (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Breanna Wood (Somerset, Mass.), while Martinelli also pulled down a team-best seven rebounds in the loss.
Springfield College jumped out to an early 7-2 advantage in the first 3:59, capped by a basket from King, before the Bears made it a three-point game on a jumper from Laura Irish (Boise, Idaho) with 2:29 to play in the first quarter, with the Pride holding an 11-8 advantage. From there, Taylor Hall (Tolland, Conn.) pushed the Pride's lead back to five with a basket at the 1:37 mark, but Brenna Farrington (East Northport, N.Y.) converted a three-pointer, making the score 13-11 in Springfield College's favor at the end of one stanza.
Opening the second quarter, Springfield College scored five consecutive points in the first 55 seconds of the frame, including a three-point play from Ashley Rouleau (Chicopee, Mass.), making it 18-11, Pride, but the Bears would score seven points over the next 4:08 to even the score at 18 with 4:57 to play in the first half. Freshman guard Allie Brennan (North Haven, Conn.) would convert a three to push the Pride's lead back to three, but Coast Guard would close the first 20 minutes of play with a 7-2 run to take a 25-23 advantage over the Pride into the locker room.
Just 1:09 into the second half, Jacques converted a three-pointer to give the Pride back a one-point lead, before Springfield College pushed its advantage to five on a three-point play from McAllister with 7:34 on the clock. Then up 31-26, Coast Guard stormed back and took a 38-35 lead on Wood's lay-up with 2:37 to play in the third. From there, Springfield College closed the frame on a 9-0 run, capped by a pair of free throws from McAllister, as the Pride would take a 44-38 lead into the fourth quarter.
With 6:18 to play, King converted a lay-up to make it 52-40, Springfield College, before Coast Guard would pull to within six on another basket from Wood with 1:52 remaining. From there, Springfield College was able to seal the win on the free-throw line, as Goslin hit the final three of the game.
Next, Springfield College will return to Blake Arena on Saturday, December 2, when it will host Wellesley in NEWMAC action at 1 p.m.
