Kissimmee, Fla. - March 22, 2019 - The Springfield College softball team had an eventful Friday in Florida, as the Pride wrapped up its annual Spring Break trip with a split against Endicott and Ripon at the Osceola County Softball Complex.
Springfield College fell to Endicott in a 5-4 barn burner that lasted 12 innings, before knocking off Ripon, 11-3, in six innings to close out the trip.
With the split, the Pride leaves Florida with a 6-4 record, and will now turn its attention to a doubleheader with Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday, March 27, beginning at 3 p.m.
With the win, Endicott is now 5-4, while Ripon falls to 5-9 with the loss.
Endicott 5, Springfield College 4 (12 innings) -- Game One
Springfield College played 12 innings with regional-rival Endicott College on Friday afternoon in its first of two games at the Osceola Country Softball Complex.
As the home team, the maroon and white struck first in the bottom of the fifth, before the Gulls countered with a pair in the top of the sixth. From there, both teams scored runs in their respecitve at-bats in the eighth and ninth, before Endicott earned the game-winning run in the top of the 12th.
Senior Shelby Allen (Oakland, N.J.) was impressive as she threw 11.0 innings, giving up just eight hits and one earned run while striking out five. Marisa Valenti (Trumbull, Conn.) came on in relief and took the loss.
Springfield College scored first on a sacrifice fly from Ava Fernandez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) that scored Allie Wheeler (Agawam, Mass.), before Allen reached on an error, allowing Alexyss Conley (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) to come home, making it 2-0, Pride.
Endicott took a 3-2 lead on a pair in the top of the sixth and one in the eighth, before the Pride rallied for a run in the bottom of the eighth on a ground out from Allen that allowed Conley to score.
After the Gulls took the lead again in the top of the ninth, the maroon and white rallied when Hannah Salvietti (Cheshire, Conn.) singled to right, plating Taylor Mancinone (Watertown, Conn.) to make it 4-4.
Endicott scored the game-winning run in the top of the 12th as the Gulls forced Springfield College into a fly out to end the game.
Springfield College 11, Ripon 3 -- Game Two
Springfield College closed out its Spring Break trip in style as the Pride left with an 11-3 win over Ripon in six innings, behind the offensive prowess of Conley, who went 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored, while Salvietti picked up her fifth RBI in the last three games.
Freshman pitcher Gillian Kane (New Canaan, Conn.) picked up her second win as she pitched 5.0 innings, giving up three earned runs, while Valenti once again came on for the final frame.
Salvietti got the scoring started with a single to center in the top of the first that plated Jen Slane (Tolland, Conn.) and Fernandez, before Conley singled through the right side to bring home Sara Mulligan (Cheshire, Conn.), which made it 3-0, Pride.
After Ripon made it a one-run game in the bottom of the third, Springfield College blew open a 5-2 lead in the top of the fourth on RBI singles from Conley and Fernandez, before the maroon and white went up 6-2 on a single from Kane.
The Pride finished off Ripon in the top of the sixth with an RBI single from Slane, before the Pride loaded the bases, only to have Mulligan clear them with a double to left center, sealing the 11-3 win.
