Pennington and Brashear Impress On One-Meter at NCAA Championships

Greensboro, N.C. - March 21, 2019 - Springfield College's Connor Pennington (Monson, Mass.) and Luca Brashear (Amherst, Mass.) both had standout performances on the one-meter board at the NCAA Division III Championships held in the Greensboro Aquatics Center.

Pennington finished third in the country in the event, while Brashear took 11th as it marked the first time since 2011 that Springfield has produced a pair of All-America honorees on the one-meter board.  In 2011, Brian Sobel and Brooks Farrar each achieved the feat after finishing 3rd and 13th, respectively.

Among the 24 divers in the event, Pennington was third in the prelims after totaling a score of 503.15.  One of eight divers in the evening's championship finals, Pennington earned a score of 501.15, a score that was highlighted by his final dive of a Back 1 1/2 Somersault 2 1/2 Twist Free that went for a 65.25.  The Computer Graphics and Digital Arts major improved on his fifth-place finish from a season ago and has now landed All-America honors each of the three times he's competed at the NCAA Championships.

Brashear made his first appearance in the national meet and finished 11th in the country on the one-meter board.  The freshman totaled a 434.95 in the prelims to finish in 12th and earn a spot in the consolation finals.  Of the nine student-athletes in the consolations, Brashear took third with a 440.55 to conclude the event in 11th place overall.

The duo will be back in action on Saturday when they compete on the three-meter board.
