St. Lawrence Downs Men's Soccer, 4-1, In Season Opener

Canton, N.Y. - August 30, 2019 - The Springfield College men's soccer team surrendered a pair of goals in the opening 22 minutes as it dropped a 4-1 decision to St. Lawrence in the opening match of the 2019 St. Lawrence Best Western Invitational at Sandy MacAllaster Field on Friday afternoon.

The Pride, which has appeared in the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament in each of the past three seasons, dropped to 0-1 on the year, while the Saints improved to 1-0.

Aidan Callahan scored two goals for the Saints, including one on a penalty kick, to help lift his squad to victory, while goalkeeper Ben Woelfinger made his first career start and stopped two shots en route to the win.

Miles Levy beat his defender on the end line defender and found Andrew Lenfant, who scored his first collegiate goal after he muscled a ball in along the goal mouth to give the Saints a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute.  Callahan then notched his first of the season with an unassisted tally in the 22nd minute, lifting the Saints to a 2-0 lead, before scoring on the penalty kick in the 52nd minute, making it 3-0 Saints.

Andrew Ma (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) would respond with Springfield's first goal of the year on a free-kick opportunity outside the 18-yard box just over eight minutes later as he stung a shot into the top corner.

With under 10 minutes to play, Michael McDougald was sent streaking down the field on a lofted pass from Robert Reynolds.  McDougald then made a quick pass to Levy, who slipped a shot past a defender and Pride goalkeeper Clayton Knibbs (Madison, Conn.) for the final goal of the game, making it 4-1 Saints.  In his first collegiate state, Knibbs made four saves, including three in the opening half.

Springfield will look to rebound on Saturday when it clashes with Clarkson in a 12 pm tilt.
