Springfield, Mass. - September 26, 2017 - The Springfield College men's soccer team scored five goals in the first half en route to a 6-2 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in non-conference play on Tuesday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.
With the win, Springfield College, which recently moved up to No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches Division III National Rankings, continues its best start in Division III program history and improves to 7-0, while with the loss, Wentworth falls to 4-6 on the year.
Springfield College held a 21-10 shot advantage over the course of 90 minutes, while each team was awarded five corner kicks apiece. In net for the Pride, Stewart Frank (Pittsford, N.Y.) picked up his seventh win of the year without making a save, while Dylan Ruzbasan (Palatine, Ill.) came on for the second half of play and made three stops to preserve the win. For the Leopards, Matthew Sekarak (Winthrop, Maine) and Joe Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) split time, combining for five saves in the defeat.
Junior forward Christian Schneider (Douglas, Mass.) led the Pride offensively with a goal and two assists, while five other Springfield College student-athletes each recorded one goal apiece. Freshman Freddy Clark (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Emmanuel Agyemang (East Hartford, Conn.) each had special days for the Pride, as the pair each recorded their first-career goals in maroon and white.
The Pride opened the day's scoring just 7:22 into the contest when Brad Deckel (Landsale, Pa.) lofted a great cross to Schneider, who headed a ball that Sekerak got a hand on, but it redirected into the net to give Springfield College a 1-0 lead. Just 9:33 later, the Pride took a 2-0 advantage over the Leopards as Schneider sent Bolduc down the left flank with a great through ball, before the senior casually placed a shot into the right side of the net with 28:05 to play in the half.
Springfield College went up three goals with 24:12 on the clock when Nick Fontana (Marshfield, Mass.) passed a ball up to Schneider, who found an open Keon Haji (Shrewsbury, Mass.) behind the Leopards' back line before he finished his one-on-one chance to make it 3-0, Pride. After Wentworth's Michael Zenden (Charlotte, N.C.) cut the Leopard's deficit to two with a long goal from well outside the box, Springfield College regained its three-goal margin when Agyemang sent Clark behind the Leopard's back line, before the freshman fought off a defender and finished the chance for his first-career goal, giving the Pride a 4-1 lead with 2:34 to play in the first half. Just 1:14 later, Agyemang notched his first-career goal in the same fashion, finishing a feed from Brendan Claflin (Burlington, Mass.) to make it 5-1, Springfield College, at the half.
Just 8:38 into the second half, Springfield College closed out its scoring for the day when Fontana got hauled down in the box, setting up a penalty kick for Xavi Arroyo (Concord, Mass.), in which the junior converted to make it 6-1, Pride.
Wentworth was able to cut its deficit to four with 17 seconds remaining when Stephen Frazier (Bedford, Mass.) scored from outside the box to make it 6-2.
Up next, Springfield College will hit the road and take on Clark in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at 1 p.m. in Worcester.
