Springfield, Mass. - March 26, 2016 - The Springfield College men's gymnastics team finished fifth in the 2016 USA Gymnastics (USAG) Men's Collegiate Championships on Friday afternoon in Blake Arena.
Air Force was crowned the varsity champion after scoring 425.350 points, followed by Army (413.850), Navy (412.850), William & Mary (405.100), and Springfield College (402.600). On the club division side, Arizona State posted a 403.650, followed by Temple (402.250), Washington (400.650), SC United (362.600), and New York Alliance (296.600).
For the Pride, Jon Zirna (East Amherst, N.Y.) took fifth in the all-around competition to earn All-America honors as he registered an 82.000.
In its opening rotation, the Pride totaled a 68.500 in the vault, as Tucker McClure (San Jose, Calif.) hit for a team-best score of 14.200. Springfield put together a 67.600 on the parallel bars, with Zirna delivering a 14.500, which tied for the top score in the evening session.
The Pride competed in the high bar next, and McClure once again paced Springfield with a 13.600 as the Pride totaled a 65.950, while Nick Jama (Westfield, Mass.) registered a 14.300 on the floor exercise to lead the hosts rotation score of 67.900.
On the pommel horse, Zirna posted the second-highest score of the evening as he nailed a 14.950 in leading Springfield to a 68.00 score, and Joshua Dieker (Ovieda, Fla.) produced a 13.450 on the rings in Springfield's final rotation, which resutled in a 64.650 team score.
Several Springfield College gymnastics will compete on Saturday in the individual portion of the championship, which will take place in Blake Arena beginning at 1 pm. Jama will represent Springfield College in the floor excercise, Dieker in the rings, while Zirna will compete on the pommel horse and parallel bars, and McClure will be in action on the high bar and pommel horse.
