Newington, Conn. - September 8, 2019 - In their first tournament of the 2019 campaign, the Springfield College golf team finished sixth at the Bill Detrick Invitational hosted at Indian Hill Country Club.
As a team, Springfield combined to post a 634 over the two-day event, shooting a 316 on Saturday and following with a 318 on Sunday to take sixth among the 10 teams in the field. Babson won the tournament with a 581 as four players had two-day totals of 146 or less. Trinity followed with a 596, Amherst posted a 602, and clipped Tufts who tallied a 603. Western New England placed fifth with a 627, with Springfield's 634, Manhattanville's 639, Trinity's 644, Wesleyan's 649, and Elms' 671 concluding the team scoring.
Mike Strong (Newington, Conn.) paced the Pride's efforts throughout the weekend and finished ninth overall with a 150, highlighted by a 74 on Sunday. Jake Raichle (Bethlehem, N.H.) tied for 28th with a 158, including a 78 in his first round of the season. Matt Gazaille (Palmer, Mass.) turned in a 165 and Doug Shane (Hamden, Conn.) followed closely behind with a 166.
Next weekend, Springfield will head to Vermont to compete in the Duke Nelson Invitational on the campus of Middlebury College.
