Springfield, Mass. - July 8, 2019 - The Springfield College Sports Communications Office was recently recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for its successful efforts in the advancement and promotion of the sport of volleyball. The College earned a NCAA Division III Sports Information Men's Volleyball Conference Honor during the announcement of the annual AVCA Grant Burger Media Award.
Led by the efforts of Assistant Athletic Director for Communications, Brian Magoffin, and Coordinator of Media Relations, Jon Santer, Springfield College was one of 11 Division III institutions from across the country to earn the accolade for men's volleyball. In fact, this marks the eighth time in the last 12 years that Springfield College has been recognized by the AVCA for its promotion of the sport of volleyball. Game recaps and statistical coverage, web and video communications, including highlight packages, postgame interviews and features throughout the season, as well as social media content were utilized to highlight and promote the success of the the Pride.
It was an impressive year for Springfield, which played in its 10th-straight Division III national semifinal and was the top-seed in the NCAA Division III Championship for the third-straight year. The Pride finished the campaign with a 27-3 record, including a 24-2 mark against Division III opponents, and has been ranked among the top two ranked programs in the country in the past 60-consecutive AVCA National polls dating back to 2015. This year, Springfield's Charlie Sullivan earned his second-consecutive AVCA Division III National Coach of the Year honor, Michael Henchy was tabbed the AVCA Division III National Assistant Coach of the Year, and Brennen Brandow was honored as the AVCA Division III National Newcomer of the Year as the Pride owned the best winning percentage in the nation.
The AVCA Grant Burger Media Award is an honor intended to recognize members of the media who have been involved in the advancement of the sport of volleyball through consistent coverage in all mediums. It is named in honor of Grant Burger, former Director of Sports Information and Associate Director of the AVCA (1988-92), whose hard work, innovative mind, knowledge and enthusiasm took the areas of media relations and publications at the AVCA to a higher level and increased awareness of the sport of volleyball nationwide.
