Boston, Mass. - October 31, 2016 - Springfield College's Kayleigh Helgesen (Oceanside, Calif.) and Lauren Holt (Granby, Conn.) were honored by the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) for their efforts in leading the Pride to a pair of key in-region victories.
Helgesen was chosen as the NEWMAC Women's Volleyball Offensive Athlete of the Week, while Holt was chosen as the NEWMAC Women's Volleyball Defensive Athlete of the Week for the third time this season.
In two matches, Helgesen tallied 30 kills at an impressive .381 clip as she averaged 4.29 per set. In a three-set win over regionally-ranked Amherst, the Sports Biology/Psychology major tallied 13 kills on a .379 hitting percentage before erupting for 17 kills at a .382 clip to go along with four blocks as the Pride bested Wellesley to clinch the second seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Championship.
Holt anchored a defense that held its opponents to a combined .119 hitting percentage and totaled 15 blocks and 15 kills. Her week was highlighted by a dominating performance at Wellesley, as the Athletic Traning major tied her career high 12 blocks, the third-highest total in a four-set match in all of Division III this season. To date, Holt leads the entire nation in total blocks (170) and blocks per set (1.67).
Springfield will host WPI in the NEWMAC Championship Quarterfinals on Tuesday evening in Blake Arena at 7 pm.
