Springfield, Mass. - January 20, 2018 - Behind first-place finishes for Brooke McCardell (Kirkwood, Pa.) and Rachel Wentnick (Metuchen, N.J.), the Springfield College women's track and field team competed in the Maroon and White Classic, hosted in the Springfield College Field House on Saturday.
McCardell, in her first meet since returning from injury, won the pole vault as she cleared 9 feet, 6.25 inches, while Wentnick won the 5k with a time of 19:33.61.
In the 60 meter dash, Courtney Luscier (Pittsfield, Mass.) took second with a time of 8.03 seconds, while in the 200 meter dash, Katie Rowe (Mansfield, Mass.) took fifth with a time of 27.44 seconds, just ahead of classmate Katie Evans (Holyoke, Mass.), who took eighth with a time of 27.73 seconds. Evans cruised to a top-five finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:04.55, while in the 800, Macayla LaChance (Peabody, Mass.) was the runner up with a time of 2:27.28, finishing just ahead of Abigail Murdock (Westerly, R.I.), who took fourth with a time of 2:32.85.
Junior Kristen Madeia (Berlin, Conn.) (5:22.92), Laura Volan (Scarborough, Maine) (5:31.65) and Murdock (5:42.05) all picked up top-five finishes in the mile, while in the 60 meter hurdles, Katherine Strain (Longmeadow, Mass.) took third with a time of 9.85 seconds. The 4x400 relay team of Madeia, LaChance, Evans and Ashley Consolini (Southwick, Mass.) took second, combining for a time of 4:18.52, while in the high jump, Taylor Nogiec (Berlin, Conn.) was the runner up, clearing 5 feet, 3 inches.
Moving on to the long jump, Tiffany Tenney (Orange, Mass.) finished third, clearing 16 feet, 3.25 inches, while Jaime Jax (Brooklyn, Conn.) took third in the triple jump with a distance of 33 feet, 2 inches. Mikaela LoPriore (Niantic, Conn.) continued to lead the lady throwers as she took third in the shot put with a heave of 37 feet, 3 inches, before finishing ninth in the weight throw with a mark of 38 feet, 8.25 inches.
Next up, Springfield College will return to the Field House on Saturday, January 27 when it will host the Massassoit Classic beginning at 1:30 p.m.
