Springfield, Mass. - December 3, 2016 - The Springfield College women's track and field program opened its 2016-17 campaign on Saturday afternooon in a six-team meet hosted in the Springfield College Field House. Standout junior Courtney Luscier (Pittsfield, Mass.) and senior Carly Markos (Wallkill, N.Y.) led the Pride, as they each produced individual victories on the afternoon.
A national qualifier in the 60 meter dash a year ago, Luscier picked up right where she left off as she posted a time of 7.93 seconds to claim the top spot in the event. The junior also took fourth overall in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.01 seconds.
Markos, who qualified for the NCAA Championships in the Hammer last season, won the Weight Throw, recording a distance of 52 feet, 4 inches, just three inches shy of the program record of 52 feet, 7 inches, set by Ilana Garbowit in 1999. Markos also took fourth overall in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 6 inches.
Sophomore Abby Tantorski (North Haven, Conn.) was outstanding in the 200 meter dash, as she posted a time of 27.59 seconds to take second overall, while in the high jump, freshman Katherine Strain (Longmeadow, Mass.) was the runner up with a jump of 4 feet, 11.75 inches. In the 3000 meter run, senior Marie Harrington (Limerick, Maine) finished in 11:11.72 to take third overall, while Alexandra Pratt (Pawcatuck, Conn.) notched a third-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 15 feet, 4.25 inches.
Along with Markos winning the weight throw, Springfield College had three other student-athletes finish in the top five as Addie Ferrer (Greenville, N.Y.) finished third with a throw of 38 feet, 7 inches, Maria Travascio (Swampscott, Mass.) took fourth with 38 feet, 4 inches, and Mikaela LoPriore (Niantic, Conn.) took fifth with a throw of 37 feet, 4.5 inches. LoPriore also had an impressive day in the shot put, as she took third with a throw of 35 feet, 10. 5 inches.
Up next, Springfield College will travel to the Middlebury College Invitational on January 14, 2017.
