Springfield, Mass. - April 14, 2018 - The Springfield College women's tennis team fell to Wellesley, 9-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at the Appleton Courts on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Pride is now 6-6 on the year and 1-4 in league play, while Wellesley improves to 11-6 overall with a 4-1 mark against league opponents.
At No. 1 doubles, the team of Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) defeated Cara Freadman (Richmond, Mass.) and Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.), before the No. 2 doubles team of Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) and Addie Kendall (Lakeville, Mass.) dropped an 8-4 decision to Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla.) and Abigail Schleichkorn (Pacific Palisades, Calif.). At No. 3 doubles, the team of Rachel Litchfield (Northbridge, Mass.) and Rachel Ahlmeyer (Morris Plains, N.J.) fell to Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) and Michelle Buyer (Wilmette, Ill.), 8-4.
Heading into singles play, Huang knocked off Freadman at the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 7-6 (3), before Peng snuck past Etter, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot. In No. 3 singles action, Hernandez blanked Litchfield, 6-0, 6-0, before Sojin Ki (Irvine, Calif.) defeated Kendall, 6-1, 7-5. Wrapping up the match, Chu beat Parrish, 7-6(4), 6-2, before Buyer closed out with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ahlmeyer.
Springfield College will resume action on Tuesday, April 17 when it heads to St. Johns Prep for a 4 p.m. match with Emerson.
