Springfield, Mass. - November 13, 2016 - Benefitting from a goal from freshman Gabrielle Fernandes (North Smithfield, R.I.), the Springfield College women's soccer team claimed the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Women's Soccer Region 1 Championship after defeating Maine Maritime, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Brock-Affleck Field.
With the win, Springfield College improves to 13-5-3 overall, and will advance to the ECAC Division III Women's Soccer Championship Semifinals, hosted at Springfield College on November 19-20. With the loss, Maine Maritime caps its season with a record of 10-7-2 on the year.
In net, junior goalkeeper Ciara Boucher (Manchester, Conn.) did not need to make a save in the win, while her counterpart, Maggie McConkey (Fryeburg, Maine) posted six stops in the setback. Over 90 minutes of play, the Pride held a 20-0 shot advantage, while Springfield College was awarded eight corner kicks in the contest.
After a majority of the first half went scoreless, the Pride finally broke the tie with 7:23 left in the period when Fernandes gathered a rebound from a blocked shot, took a step to her right, and drilled a shot past the outstretched hands of McConkey into the top right corner of the net to give Springfield College a one-goal lead.
With full control of the contest, head coach John Gibson was able to empty his bench in the second half and cruise to the 1-0 victory.
