Worcester, Mass. - November 5, 2016 - The Springfield College women's soccer suffered a 1-0 double overtime loss to WPI in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Tournament Semifinals on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
With the loss, Springfield College, which won the last four NEWMAC titles, finishes the season with a record of 11-5-3, while the Engineers, which are the top seed in the tournament, improves to 16-2-2 and advances to play in the NEWMAC Championship game on Sunday.
WPI held a 16-14 shot advantage in the contest, while the Pride was awarded eight corner kicks to the Engineers' five. Junior goalkeeper Ciara Boucher (Manchester, Conn.) kept up her impressive play as of late, as she recorded six saves in the loss. For the Engineers, Gabi Hoops (Stonington, Conn.) made four stops in the win.
Both sides struggled to find the back of the net for the first 100 minutes of play, but just 17 seconds into the second overtime period, freshman Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, Mass.) picked up a pass from Jamie Espinola (Greensboro, N.C.) and fired a shot from 19 yards out that found the back of the net to lift WPI to victory.
