Bristol, R.I. - October 26, 2016 - Behind goals from juniors Mikaela Coady (Middletown, Conn.), Mary Silva (Ludlow, Mass.) and freshman Gabrielle Fernandes (North Smithfield, R.I.), the Springfield College women's soccer program defeated Roger Williams, 3-0, on Wednesday evening.
With the win, Springfield College is now 9-4-3 on the year, while the Hawks fall to 10-7-2 overall. The Pride out shot Roger Williams, 14-11, over 90 minutes of play, while each side was awarded two corner kicks.
In net, junior goalkeeper Ciara Boucher (Manchester, Conn.) picked up six saves in the victory, while her counterpart, Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) also notched six stops, but took the loss.
Coady got Springfield College on the board just 56 seconds into the match when she took control of the ball and fired a shot into the left side of the net for her seventh marker of the season to give the Pride an early 1-0 lead.
Coady's goal stood the lone goal of the first half, but the Pride pushed its lead to a pair in the early stages of the second half when Elise Leavitt (Stratham, N.H.) sent a through ball behind the Hawks' back line, which was caught up to and finished by Silva to make it 2-0, 5:35 into the second stanza.
Just 5:08 later, Springfield College made it 3-0 when Fernandes scored her first-career goal on a shot into the left side of the net. The Pride was able to hold Roger Williams scoreless for the remainder of the contest, escaping with a 3-0 win.
This weekend, the Pride will return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, October 29 when it will travel to Wellesley for a 12 p.m. regular-season finale.
