Worcester, Mass. - February 9, 2019 - In their final dual meet of the season, the Springfield College wrestling team could not hang on to an early 18-0 lead as it was defeated by host WPI, 28-18, in Harrington Auditorium on Saturday night.
It was all Springfield to begin the match as Nicholas DeRosa (Billerica, Mass.) made a first period takedown stand up in a 3-2 decision to open up the match at 125 pounds. Ian Tolotti (Dumont, N.J.) then took home a six-point victory by injury default at 133 before Mike Vietri (Dumont, N.J.) posted a 11-5 decision at 141 and Kearney Gutierrez (Freeport, N.Y.) recorded a first period pin at 149 to give the visitors an 18-0 cushion.
Tyler Marsh got WPI into the scoring column with an 8-0 major decision at 157 pounds, before Ronan Ball delivered a pin just 57 seconds into his bout at 165. Trailing now 18-10, the Engineers continued the comeback as Chase Lind tallied a 7-4 decision at 174 pounds and Dan Wensley collected a 7-1 win at 184. WPI then completed rally with pins from a pair of seniors, as Michael Curtis produced a win by pinfall at 197 pounds at 1:53 to put the hosts ahead for the first time all night, and Nick Day secured the win for the Engineers, getting a fall 4:33 into his match at 285.
The postseason now awaits the Pride as the Futures Tournament is Sunday, February 17th at Trinity while the NCAA Division III Northeast Regionals are Saturday, February 23rd and Sunday, February 24th at Johnson & Wales.
