Wrestling Places Sixth at Budd Whitehill Duals

Williamsport, Pa. - January 13, 2018 - The Springfield College wrestling team finished sixth at the Budd Whitehill Duals as it defeated SUNY Oswego, 22-20, before falling to Wisconsin-Eau Claire, 28-18, on Saturday.

It was a thrilling first match for the Pride as rallied to a victory against Oswego.  Springfield strung two victories together to start the day as Joel Zambrano (Bellmore, N.Y.) posted a 3-0 decision at 125 and Ian Tolotti (Dumont, N.J.) cruised to a 10-2 major decision at 133.  After setbacks at 141 and 149, Kearney Gutierrez (Freeport, N.Y.) earned a 6-4 at 157, only to have Oswego produce a win by technical fall at 165 to gain an 11-10 advantage.  Ryan Harty (Plymouth, Mass.) came through with a huge pin in overtime at 175 to put the Pride back on top, but a major decision at 184 and pin at 197 by the Lakers allowed Oswego to take control, 21-16, heading into the final bout.  However, Joseph Fusco (Billerica, Mass.) delivered another incredible performance, posting a pin in just 2:13 to rally the Pride to the victory.

In the fifth-place match against Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Springfield stormed out to a 12-0 advantage thanks to forfeit at 125 for Zambrano and a pin by Tolotti in just 59 seconds at 133.  However, the Blugolds won the next seven bouts to open up a 28-12 edge before Fusco added another win by pinfall, needing just 1:33 to complete the 28-18 scores.

Of the 10-person All-Tournament Team, Springfield was one of only two programs to have multiple selections, as both Tolotti and Fusco were honored for their efforts at 133 and 285, respectively.

Springfield will next compete on January 17 when it travels to Vermont to battle Norwich at 7 pm.
