Williamsport, Pa. - January 12, 2018 - The Springfield College wrestling team competed in the annual Budd Whitehill Duals on Friday afternoon at Lycoming College, besting RIT before falling to nationally-ranked Messiah.
Springfield began the day rallying past RIT, 21-17, as the Pride produced a pair of pins in the final four bouts to earn the win. Springfield used victories by decisions in the opening three matches to jump out to a 9-0 lead after Joel Zambrano (Bellmore, N.Y.) won by a 6-4 score at 125, Ian Tolotti (Dumont, N.J.) prevailed 9-2 at 133, and Derek Bohle (Allenstown, N.H.) produced a 5-0 win at 141. After RIT won three-straight bouts to take a 11-9 lead, Ryan Harty (Plymouth, Mass.) delivered a critical win in 4:36 at 174 to put the Pride back on top. Two more decision-victories from RIT made it a 17-15, only to have Joseph Fusco (Billerica, Mass.) come through with a win by pinfall in 2:17 for the 21-17 victory.
The Pride registered five wins among the 10 bouts versus Messiah, but bonus points proved to be the difference as they fell by a 25-16 score. The Pride got off to a great start with four-straight wins to race out to a 13-0 lead. Zambrano won 10-8 at 125, Tolotti delivered an 8-0 major decision at 133, while Bohle took a 5-1 decision at 131 and Roger Moyer (Lebanon, Conn.) battled to a 7-4 win at 149. However, Messiah used four-consecutive wins of their own, including a pair of pins, a major decision, and technical fall, to storm out to a 25-13 win. Fusco closed out the dual with a 10-3 decision to make it a 25-16 final.
In the Pride's final match, Springfield won by forfeit over Milliken.
Springfield will resume competition at 10:30 on Saturday against UW-Eau Claire.
