Springfield, Mass. - November 11, 2017 - The Springfield College wrestling team captured the 2017 City of Springfield Championship on Saturday as it bested local-foes Western New England, American International College, and Springfield Technical CC.
The Pride opened the day with a 21-13 win over WNE before Springfield cruised to a 43-10 victory against AIC. In their final match of the day, Springfield sealed the championship with a 27-10 triumph over host STCC.
In the win over WNE, Springfield fell behind 6-0 through the opening two bouts before George Tarwo (Concord, N.H.) delivered a 6-3 win at 197 and Fusco produced a first-period pin at 285 to take the lead. After dropping one at 125, Ian Tolotti (Dumont, N.J.) and and Derek Bohle (Allenstown, N.H.) each notched decisions at 133 and 141. Springfield would later seal the victory with decision wins by Michael Vietri (Dumont, N.J.) and Aarin Feliz (Lake Hawatha, N.J.) at 157 and 165.
Ryan Harty (Plymouth, Mass.) opened up the AIC match with a major decision at 174 to get things started for the Pride, and after benefitting from forfeits at 184 and 197, Springfield was in control with a 16-0 cushion. Nick DeRosa (Billerica, Mass.) produced a win by pinfall at 133 and Vietri added another decision at 157 en route to the 43-10 victory.
In their final match of the day against host STCC, the Pride fell behind 7-0 through two weight classes before a decision at 197 by Tarwo and pin from Fusco at 285 put Springfield up for good. The Pride would get decision wins by DeRosa, Pat Ferzoco (Stoughton, Mass.), Vietri, and Christopher Munnell (Concord, N.H.) to cruise to the 27-10 win.
Next up, Springfield will host the Doug Parker Invitational on Saturday, November 18 in the Springfield College Field House.
