Springfield, Mass. - March 7, 2017 - Senior Zach Joseph (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and junior Hunter Ayen (Gouverneur, N.Y.) will represent the Springfield College wrestling team at the 2017 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships this weekend in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
This marks the seventh-straight year that Springfield College has sent multiple wrestlers to the NCAA Championships. The pair advanced to the national meet after placing in the top three at the 2017 NCAA Division III Wrestling Northeast Regional Championships on February 26, as Joseph was the regional runner-up at 157 and Ayen took third at 197. This will be Ayen's second trip to the national stage after making in 2015, while Joseph will compete at the NCAA's for the first time.
In the 157 pound weight class, Joseph enters the competition with a 27-2 record and is seeded fifth in the 18-man field. A Business Management major, Joseph's opening round match pits him against Jimmy Davis from Loras, who owns a 22-4 record this season. The winner of that match will advance to face off against either fourth-seeded Derek Arnold (28-1) from Ursinus, Grant Parker (22-10) from Augsburg, or Rocco Russo (11-2) from Oswego.
At 197, Ayen, who is majoring in Recreation Management, will take his 17-5 record up against fifth-seeded AJ Kowal (34-3) of Stevens in the opening round of the NCAA Championships. The winner advancing to wrestle either fourth-seeded Devon Carrillo (21-1) from Wesleyan or Central College's Will Seabold (19-5).
