Wrestling Claims City of Springfield Championship For Ninth Time in 11 Years

Springfield, Mass. - February 1, 2017 - For the ninth time in the last 11 seasons, the Springfield College wrestling claimed the City of Springfield Championship, defeating Springfield Technical Community College, Western New England and American International College on Wednesday night at WNE.

Springfield won the last nine bouts of its showdown with STCC to cruise to a 46-6 opening round win.  After forfeiting at 125, Nick DeRosa (Billerica, Mass.) evened the match up at 6-6 with a pin and Victor Guzman (Lawrence, Mass.) grinded out a 4-1 win at 141 to put the Pride ahead for good.  Both Kearney Gutierez (Freeport, N.Y.) and Zach Joseph (Clifton Park, N.Y.) followed with wins by technical fall, before Aarin Feliz (Lake Hawatha, N.J.) prevailed in a 7-2 match at 165.  Three consecutive forfeits from STCC gave way to Joseph Fusco's (Billerica, Mass.) victory by pinfall at 285.

The Pride continued to roll against American International College, delivering a convincing 46-10 victory.  Devin Marino (West Islip, N.Y.) wasted no timing producing a pin at 125, and after thanks to four AIC forfeits in the next five bouts, the Pride built a 30-4 cushion.  A hard-nosed 7-0 triumph by Jake Kennedy (Maynard, Mass.) and a, 18-3 technical fall from Seve Burgos (Guilford, Conn.) put the finishing touches on the 36-point victory.

In its third and final bout against rival Western New England, the Pride stormed out to a 17-3 advantage, thanks to technical falls from Marino and Joseph.  Burgos would later deliver a pin at 184 to Fusco sealed the Pride's win with a mjaor decision at 285.

This weekend, Springfield will host a quad-meet with Plymouth State, Castleton, and Johnson and Wales beginning at 12 p.m.
