Williamsport, Pa. - January 14, 2017 - The Springfield College wrestling team became the only Division III wrestling program across the nation to eclipse 1000 dual meet victories, as the Pride defeated Thiel and Wesleyan on Saturday at the Budd Whitehill Duals, hosted by Lycoming College.
After defeating Thiel on Saturday morning, Springfield College became the only Division III wrestling program in the nation to have 1000 dual meet victories in the programs existence. The Springfield College wrestling program, which began in 1915, has collected wins competing in the College/University Division, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III over 102 years.
Additionally, after defeating Brett Beltz (Bridgeville, Pa.) of Thiel, standout senior Zach Joseph (Clifton Park, N.Y.) picked up his 100th career victory in maroon and white to help lead the Pride to its monumental victory.
After the Pride forfeited at 125, freshman Ian Tolotti (Dumont, N.J.) picked up a win by major decision over Vincent Mion (Mount Oliver, Pa.) to cut the Pride's deficit to two, and sophomore Derek Bohle (Allenstown, N.H.) and junior Kearney Gutierrez (Freeport, N.Y.) both won by forefeit to give Springfield College a 16-6 lead.
At 157, Joseph pinned Brett Beltz (Bridgeville, Pa.) in 1:26 to give the Pride another six points, before junoir Geovanni Medina (New Britain, Conn.) won by major decision over Cam Cianci (Hermitage, Pa.) at 165 to make it 26-6, Springfield College. After sophomore Seve Burgos (Guilford, Conn.) won by forfeit at 184, junior Hunter Ayen (Gouverneur, N.Y.) picked up his third win of the weekend over Cody Ellis by pinfall in 56 seconds, before first-year Joseph Fusco (Billerica, Mass.) sealed the match with a pin in 1:04 to give the Pride it's 1000th dual meet victory in program history.
Taking on regional-rival Wesleyan University in the Pride's second match of the day, Springfield College picked up wins at 125 from Joel Zambrano (Bellmore, N.Y.) and 133 from Tolotti to take an early 6-3 advantage, but James Matias (Rocky Point, N.Y.) defeated Bohle to cut the Cardinals' lead in half. At 149, Carter Armendarez (Temecula, Calif.) won by decision over Gutierrez to even the match at six, before Joseph produced a tech fall win at 157 over Robert Rosenberg (Woodmere, N.Y.) to give Springfield College an 11-6 advantage.
At 165, Nicholas Almonte (Cranston, R.I.) won by major decision to make it 15-6, Pride, before Medina produced a narrow 5-4 decision victory over Dominic Pirraglia (Shoreham, N.Y.) at 174 to make it 18-6. Burgos won on injury at 184 to push the Pride's lead to 18, before Ayen fell by decision and Fusco won by forfeit to seal the Pride's second win of the day.
