Ithaca, N.Y. - November 4, 2016 - The Springfield College wrestling team opened up its season competing in the first day of the Ithaca Invitational on Friday afternoon. After the opening day of action, Springfield sits in fourth place out of the 11 teams in the competition with 39.5 points.
Geovanni Medina (New Britain, Conn.) had a tremendous start to his season wrestling at the 174 weight class, pinning Joesph Roy from Johnson & Wales and Oswego's Bryce Reed in 2:12 and 5:53, respectively. Also at 174, Elias Kokalis (Great Neck, N.Y.) earned two impressive wins, delivering a 10-0 major decision against Daniel Sblendorio of Johnson & Wales and a win by pinfall over Dakota Delisle from WNE in 1:01.
At 133, Ian Tolotti (Dumont, N.J.) won his first two collegiate bouts, with a win by fall over Franky Roman of Rhode Island College in 1:04 before posting a 10-6 decision against Norwich's Jacob Forsman. Additionally, Tyler Fitzpatrick (Plaistow, N.H.) advanced to the quarterfinals at 133 as he pinned Ryan Keefe from RIT in 2:15 and grinded out a 5-1 decision versus WNE's Tim McLinden.
Patrick Ferzoco (Stoughton, Mass.) delivered two wins at 141 for the Pride, besting Chris Haskin of Greensboro College, 4-0, before topping RIC's Jake Dorman, 8-3.
In his first collegiate action, Joseph Fusco (Billerica, Mass.) posted two wins by decisions, with a 7-3 victory against Nick Fortini of Western New England and an 11-9 battle over Kevin Lewis of Johnson & Wales.
Three Springfield wrestlers needed to win just advance to Saturday's quarterfinals. Jacob Strohman (East Longmeadow, Mass.) topped Ithaca's Ben Brisman, 9-8, while Aarin Feliz (Lake Hawatha, N.J.) and Ryan Ward (Sussex, N.J.) were victorious in their outings at 165. Feliz pinned WNE's Ryan Guers in 1:42, and Ward posted a 15-4 major decision against RIT's Dan Lucey.
