London, England - May 30, 2017 - Despite 12 points and six rebounds from Heather King (Lebanon, N.H.) and 11 points from Lexi Windwer (Milton, Mass.), the Springfield College women's basketball team finished its Europe Trip with a 60-54 loss to Barking Abbey on Tuesday afternoon.
The Pride just completed a 10-day tour of the United Kingdom, a trip that was coordinated through GoPlay Sports via American Council International Studies (ACIS) Educational Tours out of Boston, Mass. Springfield College took on the Polonia Phoenix in Edinburgh, Scotland, Manchester Mystics of Manchester, England and wrapped up its three-game set with Barking Abbey, a premiere women's basketball club in London, England.
Along with 23 combined points from King and Windwer, Alex Goslin (South Windsor, Conn.) was impressive for the Pride, as the young guard finished with six points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals. Gracie Restituyo (Barrington, R.I.) also had an outstanding game, as she finished with eight points and eight rebounds in 16 minutes of play.
Barking Abbey, which was a team comprised of the Club's WBLL and Division I players, shot 23-for-64 (35.9%) in the win, as it was led by Savannah Wilkinson, who is currently committed to Florida State University. Wilkinson finished with 19 points and 17 rebounds in the victory. The Pride was 22-for-59 (37.3%) from the floor, and had 41 rebounds compared to Barking Abbey's 42.
Springfield College put the pressure on Barking Abbey early, as it jumped out to a 16-4 advantage, capped by a lay-up from Restituyo at the 4:28 mark of the first quarter, forcing a timeout from the hosts. From there, Barking Abbey pulled to within eight, making it 18-10 on two free-throws from Zoe Willis, with 2:15 on the clock, before Taylor Hall (Tolland, Conn.) responded with a bucket of her own to make it 20-10, Springfield College, with 1:49 to play. Wilkinson buried a pair of free-throws in the final minute of the first stanza to make it 20-12, Pride, at the end of one.
Windwer canned two triples in the opening stages of the second quarter to make it 28-15, Springfield College, a 13-point lead the Pride would hold on to until the 3:17 mark of the frame, before Barking Abbey quickly made it a six-point game with a 7-0 run to close the half. The Pride went into the break leading 36-30.
Springfield College hung tough in the third quarter, as it pushed its lead back to eight on a jumper from Restituyo, but Barking Abbey's athleticism proved tough for the Pride, as the hosts tied the game at 38 with 5:04 to play in the frame. Springfield College would regain a five-point, 44-39 lead over Barking Abbey when Goslin converted a lay-up with 1:37 on the clock, but Barking Abbey's Megan Cheret made it an even score with 49 seconds left when she converted a lay-up of her own. Goslin nailed a jumper to end the frame, sending the Pride into the fourth quarter with a 46-44 lead.
Springfield College clung to a four-point lead until the 6:03 mark of the fourth quarter when Barking Abbey nailed a three to make it 52-51, a lead that the hosts would never give up, as it closed out the 60-54 win.
