Manchester, England – May 27, 2017 – The Springfield College women's basketball team picked up its second win of the Pride's 10-day trip through the United Kingdom, as it defeated the Manchester Mystics, 59-33, on Saturday evening. The Pride is currently taking on local teams in the U.K. as part of GoPlay Sports via American Council International Studies (ACIS) Educational Tours out of Boston, Mass.
The Pride was led by 16 points and nine rebounds from Heather King (Lebanon, N.H.), while Gracie Restituyo (Barrington, R.I.) followed with eight points to go along with 17 rebounds in the win. Springfield College held a 76-38 advantage in rebounds over the course of 40 minutes, as the Pride shot 22-for-70 (31.4%) in the win.
Springfield College jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, as Gracie Restituyo (Barrington, R.I.) scored four out of the Pride's first six points, before Manchester cut its deficit in half on a three-pointer from Chloe Andrew with 5:56 to play in the first quarter. From there, Springfield College went on a 9-0 run, capped back-to-back lay-ups from Taylor Hall (Tolland, Conn.) and Ava Adamopoulos (Ludlow, Mass.) to make it 17-3, before Lucy Threlfall made it an 11-point game with a three-pointer with 53 seconds in the stanza. Adamopoulos ended the frame with another bucket to give the Pride a 19-3 lead after one.
A pair of free throws from Emily Jacques (Auburn, Maine) and a good jumper from King pushed the Pride's lead to 19 midway through the second quarter, before Chelsea McAllister (Baltimore, Vt.) and Alex Goslin (South Windsor, Conn.) registered points to close out the first half, giving the Pride a 33-6 lead at the break.
A three-pointer from Manchester's Ashana Hinas sparked the Mystics in the second half, as the hosts cut its deficit in half on a triple from Gina Brierley to make it 35-17, Springfield College, with 5:19 to play in the third quarter. Prior to the end of the stanza, The Pride pushed its lead to 28, as Lexi Windwer (Milton, Mass.) closed the frame with a three-pointer to make it 50-22.
Windwer drilled another three with 6:58 to play that gave the Pride a 57-24 lead, but the Mystics showed their resiliency, as a pair of free-throws from Chloe Andrew and Fiona Connolly made it 57-28 with 4:54 on the clock. Manchester's Jade Mbam finished the game with a three-pointer to finalize the scoring at 59-33.
