Springfield, Mass. - December 10, 2016 - Junior forward Heather King (Lebanon, N.H.) and senior center Ava Adamopoulos (Ludlow, Mass.) combined for 30 points and 11 rebounds as the Springfield College women's basketball team defeated Worcester State in overtime, 49-43, on Saturday afternooon in Blake Arena.

With the win, the Pride, which was playing Saturday's game in Celebration of 125 Years of Basketball at Springfield College, improves to 5-2 overall with the win, while the Lancers are now 4-7 on the year.

The Pride shot 19-for-57 (33.3%) from the field in the victory, while Worcester State was 19-of-55 (34.5%) in the loss. Both sides finished with 41 rebounds, as Springfield College turned 26 Lancer turnovers into 16 points on the afternoon

King  led all scorers as she netted 16 points to go along with six boards, while Adamopoulos came off the bench to register 14 points and five rebounds on the afternoon. Additionally, freshman guard Alex Goslin (South Windsor, Conn.) finished with eight points, six boards, five assists, and three steals in the win.

For Worcester State, five different players scored at least six points, with Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) and Kate Suprenant (Pellham, N.H.) each netting seven.  Bianca Langford (Worcester, Mass.) added a game-high 11 boards and Britt Herring (West Brookfield, Mass.) was credited with four blocks.

A low scoring first-quarter that saw the visitors own a 10-8 advantage, with King accounting for four points.

The Lancers extended their lead to 16-10 on a jumper in the paint by Britt Herring just over three minutes into the second quarter, but back-to-back jumpers from Goslin pulled the Pride to within a pair with 3:25 left in the half. With under two minutes until the break, Adamopoulos found Rachel Menze (West Haven, Conn.) in the low post for a tough catch and finish, but on the Lancers' next possession, Brianna Hackett (Hollis, N.H.) drilled a three-pointer to push the visitors' lead to five. Adamopoulos would cash in on a pair from the free-throw line to send it into the half, 21-18, in favor of Worcester State.

King was an offensive spark for the Pride to begin the second half, as her baseline jumper gave the Pride its first lead of the game, 28-26, with 2:51 left in the third.  However, the Lancers responded with a 6-1 push to close the quarter, with a Langford bucket that gave the visitors a 32-29 advantage heading into the final quarter.

After going down five points early in the fourth, consecutive baskets from Adamopolous and an inside finish from King put the hosts back on top, 35-34, with 7:42 left in regulation.  Another jumper in the lane by Adampolous at the 5:09 mark forced Worcester State into a timeout trailing 39-35, only to have a putback bucket by Herring even things back at 39 apiece with 3:54 remaining. King got free on a backdoor cut on the ensuing posession and Chelsea McAllister (Baltimore, Vt.) found her for an easy catch-and-finish to put Springfield back on top.

A runner in the lane by Surprenant with 20.5 seconds remaining knotted the game, and out of a timeout, the Pride came up empty as the game went into overtime.

Adamopolous drilled a turnaround jumper for the first points of overtime at the 2:57 mark, and free throws from Lexi Winder (Milton, Mass.), McAllister and Goslin gave Springfield a 47-41 cushion with under a minute to play.  After the Lancers scored their first bucket of the overtime session, an inside finish by Langford, Goslin sealed the game with two freebies as the Pride held on for a 49-43 win.

The Pride will play its final game of the semester when it travels to face Westfield State for a 7 p.m. game on December 16.
