Softball Walks Off in Game One Setting Up Non-Conference Sweep of Western New England

Springfield, Mass. - April 24, 2019 - The Springfield College softball team swept Western New England in non-conference play, wrapping up the Pride's final regular-season home game at Potter Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Pride defeated its cross-town rival, 3-2, in eight innings, benefitting from a walk-off single from junior Jen Slane (Tolland, Conn.) in the first game, before defeating the Golden Bears, 7-4, in game two.

Springfield College 3, Western New England 2 (Final - 8 innings) -- Game One

Senior pitcher Shelby Allen (Oakland, N.J.) pitched a strong 8.0 innings for the Pride, giving up just three hits while striking out seven en route to her ninth win of the season.

After giving up a run in the top of the fifth, Springfield College finally broke through in the bottom of the frame when Sara Mulligan (Cheshire, Conn.) started the rally with a two-out single, before Marisa Valenti (Trumbull, Conn.) registered an infield single in the next at bat. Circling back to the top of the order, Conley singled to right field to score Mulligan and even the score at one apiece.

Western New England regained a one-run lead in the top of the sixth, and the Pride's bats were quiet until the bottom of the seventh when Kayla Stvan (Parlin, N.J.) led off with a single, before Mulligan reached on a fielder's choice, resulting in two runners on with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt from Valenti put the runners in scoring position, Conley grounded out to short, but Christina D'Ambro (New Hartford, N.Y.) was able to cross home to make the score even at two apiece and force extra innings.

After Allen held the Golden Bears scoreless in the top of the eighth, Meghan Sastram (Oxford, Conn.) was place on second, before moving to third on a ground out from Yaixsa Vargas (Waterbury, Conn.). With two outs, Slane pinch hit and roped a single into right-center, allowing Sastram to score, lifting the Pride to a game-one victory.

 

Springfield College 7, Western New England 4 -- Game Two

Sastram and Ava Fernandez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) each had two RBI and Gillian Kane (New Canaan, Conn.) earned her ninth win of the season as the Pride held off a late rally and defeated Western New England, 7-4, to complete the sweep on Wednesday afternoon.

Kane pitched 6.0 strong frames, striking out a pair of batters, before Valenti came on and pitched the final 1.0 innings.

Western New England picked up two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Pride responded in the bottom of the frame when Conley led off with a stand-up triple, before Sastram roped a single to right field, scoring Conley from third to make it 2-1. Later in the inning, Allie Wheeler (Agawam, Mass.) would lace a single to right field which scored Sastram to pull the Pride even at two apiece.

Springfield College added two runs in the bottom of the fourth as Conley drove in Gabrielle Alfieri (Cornwall, N.Y.) with a single to center, before Sastram drove in her classmate with a single up the middle as well to give the Pride a 4-2 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth, the maroon and white added three more runs to take a five-run lead when Wheeler drove in Allen with a single down the left-field line, before Fernandez roped a two-run double to right center, scoring Mulligan and Wheeler.

Western New England would rally for a pair in the top of the seventh, but Valenti shut the door and sealed the win for the Pride.
