Men’s Volleyball Rolls Past Kean and Rutgers-Newark

Newark, N.J. – January 26, 2013 – The Springfield College men’s volleyball team put forth a pair of dominating offensive performances to sweep both Kean and Rutgers-Newark in the Golden Dome Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

The nation’s top-ranked team, Springfield handled 12th-ranked Kean, 25-13, 25-18, 25-11, before dispatching the host Scarlet Raiders, 25-20, 25-17, 25-23.

Against Kean, Springfield hit .441 as a team, with Alistair Matthews tallying a team-best nine kills at a .533 clip. Mike Pelletier recorded seven kills on 15 errorless attempts to go with a match-best seven digs, while Jimmy O’Leary produced eight kills, hitting .615 while notching three blocks. Greg Falcone had a team-best five blocks, and Mike Becker registered 24 assists, two blocks, and two aces.

The Pride’s offense was overpowering against the host Rutgers-Newark squad, as it ended the match with a .507 hitting percentage. Evan Acanfora totaled a team-best eight kills in just two sets, hitting .778, while Pelletier and Matthews each added seven kills of their own. Nick Ferry racked up a match-best seven digs, and Becker and Eric Johnson combined for 42 assists running the Pride’s offense.

Springfield will now prepare for its home opener on Friday evening when it battles rival and third-ranked Juniata in the Volleyball Hall of Fame/Morgan Classic at 8:00 pm.
