Springfield, Mass. - August 15, 2016 - Springfield College Director of Athletics, Dr. Craig Poisson, is pleased to announce that Mike Miller '08 G'12 has been named the head men's and women's track & field coach at Springfield College.
Miller returns to his alma mater after holding assistant coaching positions at both Central Connecticut State University and Amherst College.
"I am thankful for this opportunity to give back to a program that has helped shape me into the person and coach I am today. I would like to thank the search committee, Dr. Poisson, and Coach Posillico for selecting me to aid in the Springfield College experience," explained Miller. "Through the interview process, I had a sense that it is a very exciting time to be at Springfield College. I am honored to be a part of Ken Klatka's legacy and look forward to starting my own at Springfield College. I'm excited to be back home in a program I love and pass on the traditions and experience to future generations."
Since 2015, Miller was an assistant coach at CCSU where he focused on the pole vault and throwing events, which resulted in school records in both the men's pole vault and women's weight throw along with contributing to a Northeast Conference Championship for outdoor track. Miller previously spent three years as an assistant coach at Amherst College, where he was charged with working with the sprinters, hurdlers, jumper and throwing events. As a member of the coaching staff, Miller helped Amherst capture the 2015 ECAC Indoor Championships as well as own the third-best team grade point average in the all of Division III track & field.
"I'm excited to be adding Mike Miller to our coaching staff. Mike's connection with Springfield College will drive his commitment to the student-athletes he will be mentoring every day," said Springfield College Director of Cross Country and Track & Field, Angelo Posillico. "Mike's versatile background as an athlete and a coach makes him an asset to our staff and will help us to provide the best coaching to all event areas of the track and field teams."
Miller spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Springfield College from 2010-12 and benefited from the guidance of longtime Springfield College head coach, Ken Klatka. While on staff, Miller aided in the planning of both the Division III New England Indoor Championships and the ECAC Outdoor Championships, while coaching a national qualifier for Springfield in the javelin.
"Coach Miller's link to the tradition of this program as a former national qualifier under Coach Klatka, along with his strong regional recruiting network, makes him a great fit for the direction we are headed with this program, " described Poisson. "I know that his eagerness to assume the teacher coach role alongside Coach Posillico and Steinman in our new coaching model will elevate our student-athletes experiences."
A 2008 graduate of Springfield College, Miller earned a degree in Business Management, and later completed his Master's degree in Advanced Level Coaching in 2012. During his time as a student-athlete at Springfield, Miller was a standout on the track & field team, qualifying for NCAA Championships as a decathlete in 2005, 2007, and 2008. He was also a two-time New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) champion in the high jump and won the ECAC Division III Championship in the decathlon twice.
