Cambridge, Mass. - February 22, 2018 - Competing for the first time at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) swimming and diving championships, freshman Connor Pennington (Monson, Mass.) took second overall on the one-meter board as the Springfield College men's swimming and diving team opened competition on Thursday evening.
After the first day of competition, Springfield College sits in second place with 96 points, while MIT leads the pack with 125. Rounding out the top five is Coast Guard (90), WPI (83) and Clark (54).
Pennington had a field-leading score of 495.25 after prelims, before the freshman notched a score of 475.00 in the finals, taking second overall. Additionally, Valmore Stewart (Windsor, Conn.) finished fourth overall with a nationally-qualifying score of 436.25, while George Colarullo (Groton, Mass.) was ninth with a score of 382.85.
In the 800 freestyle relay, the team of Nicholas Smith (Longmeadow, Mass.), Tyler Morano (Middleboro, Mass.), Vladimir Burnin (Sosnovy Bor, Leningrad Oblast, Russia) and Roberto Morales (Westfield, Mass.) combined for a time of 7:20.45 to take fifth overall.
Springfield College will open Friday's competition with the 200 freestyle relay prelims at 10 a.m.
