Deckel's Second-Half Strike Leads Men's Soccer Past Gordon, 1-0

Beverly, Mass. - September 18, 2018 - Behind a second-half strike from senior midfielder Brad Deckel (Lansdale, Pa.), the Springfield College men's soccer team came away with a 1-0 victory over Gordon College in non-conference play on Tuesday afternoon at the Brigham Athletic Complex.

With the win, the Pride is now 5-2 on the year, while the Fighting Scots, which entered the match with four wins including one over No. 4 Brandeis, falls to 4-3 on the year. The Pride finished with 20 shots over 90 minutes of play, while Springfield College's defense only allowed Gordon to get 11 shots, including just two which were on net. The Pride also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Stewart Frank (Pittsford, N.Y.) turned away both shots on goal to claim his fifth win of the year, while his counterpart Wesley Sprague (Naperville, Ill.) made 11 stops between the pipes for the hosts. Deckel's second-half goal marked the third of the year for the senior.

Gordon had the first shot on goal in the 13th minute, which was stopped by Frank, before Xavi Arroyo (Concord, Mass.) and Andrew Ma (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) both tested Sprague, but the sophomore goalkeeper was able to keep the game scoreless as he picked up a pair of saves. In the 22nd minute, Gordon's Micah Craig (Corvallis, Ore.) had a chance to put his squad on the board but his header hit off the crossbar before the Pride's defense cleared the opportunity.

Applying pressure on the Fighting Scots' back line early in the second half, the Pride received a foul call in the box, allowing for Deckel to convert his chance and give the visitors a 1-0 lead. From there, the Pride didn't let up as it produced a total of 14 second-half shots. Sprague kep the Fighting Scots in the game, but Gordon was unable to convert on Springfield's back line, resulting in the 1-0 win.

This weekend, the Pride will travel to Babson for a 2 p.m. contest with the Beavers on Saturday, September 22.
