Fitchburg, Mass. - October 25, 2016 - Sophomore forward Christian Schneider (Douglas, Mass.) found the back of the net with 16:26 to play, as the Springfield College men's soccer team defeated Fitchburg State, 2-1, in non-conference action on Tuesday night.
With the win, Springfield College, which moved up to No. 23 in the latest D3soccer.com National Rankings, improves to 15-1-1 on the year, while the Falcon's fall to 4-11-1 overall. The Pride's 15 victories in 2016 is the program record for most wins in a regular season.
Springfield College out shot Fitchburg State, 25-3, over the course of 90 minutes, while the Pride also had 10 corner kicks in the contest. In net, senior goalkeeper Zach Richard (Millbury, Mass.) made no stops, while his counterpart Connor Smith (York, Maine) posted nine saves over 90 minutes of play.
The Falcons got on the board first when Matthew Krikorian (Groton, Mass.) found the back of the net just 7:46 into the contest to give Fitchburg State an early 1-0 lead. Springfield College continued to show its resiliency, as the Pride knotted the score at one apiece when senior forward Taylor Gilfoy (Holliston, Mass.) found the back of the net for the sixth time this year with 21:54 to play in the opening period.
After back-and-forth play to begin the second half, the Pride finally broke open the tie when Luke Alvaro (Chicopee, Mass.) set up Schneider for his sixth goal of the season with 16:26 remaining in the contest. Schneider's goal proved to be the game winner, as the Pride escaped with the one-goal victory.
Up next, Springfield College will hit the road for its regular-season finale when it will take on Coast Guard in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, October 29 at 1 p.m.
