Fast Start Leads Men's Soccer to 4-1 Victory Over Westfield State

Westfield, Mass. - September 10, 2016 - The Springfield College men's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the first 9:52 of the match en route to a 4-1 victory over Westfield State University on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

With the win, the Pride improve to 4-0 to start the 2016 season, while the Owls fall to 2-2 overall. Springfield College held an 18-13 shot advantage in the win, while also holding an 8-5 margin in corner kicks over 90 minutes of play.

In net, senior Zach Richard (Millbury, Mass.) picked up his fourth win of the year, making one save in 45 minutes of play, while freshman Camden Spear (Boothbay, Maine) came on in relief and posted a career-best five saves to preserve the win. For the Owls, junior Marc Patnaude (North Andover, Mass.) made three stops and took the loss.

Senior forward Luke Alvaro (Chicopee, Mass.) scored the Pride's first goal of the game with a header off of a cross from Christian Schneider (Douglas, Mass.) just 6:47 into the contest to give the Pride an early 1-0 lead over the Owls.

Just 2:38 later, junior midfielder Danny Murphy (Old Saybrook, Conn.) put a shot on cage that deflected off of a Westfield State defender, but junior midfielder Curtis Bolduc (South Windsor, Conn.) collected the loose ball and found the back of the net, giving the Pride a 2-0 lead.

The Owls quickly cut its deficit in half when Brodie Keene (Agawam, Mass.) gained possession of a ball that was headed by Connor Gilbert, and tucked a shot past Richard to make it 2-1, Springfield.

Just 5:15 before halftime junior defender Cam Powell (Housatonic, Mass.) made it 3-1, Springfield, after a shot was put on cage from Rich Humphrey (Mandeville, La.), and Powell won position on the ball and redirected it into the net to bring the Pride's lead back to a pair heading into the break.

With 6:58 left in the game, Bolduc tacked on his second strike of the game when Schneider crossed the ball from the right side of the field, allowing for Bolduc to knock the pass by Patnaude to seal the 4-1 victory.

Up next, Springfield will travel to Anna Maria College on Wednesday, September 14 for a 7 p.m. match.
