Newton, Mass. - September 2, 2016 - Behind a six-point performance from junior Curtis Bolduc (South Windsor, Conn.) and five points from senior Taylor Gilfoy (Holliston, Mass.), the Springfield College men's soccer program opened up its 2016 campaign with a convincing 6-0 win over Lasell College in Newton on Friday afternoon.
With the win, Springfield improves to 1-0, while the Lazers fall to 0-1 to begin the year. In the match, the Pride outshot Lasell 29-7, while the visitors had six corner kicks to the hosts three.
Senior goalkeeper Zach Richard (Millbury, Mass.) picked up his first win of the season, as he made one save, while Stewart Frank (Pittsford, N.Y) came on in relief and picked up four saves to preserve the shutout. For Lasell, Patrick McAvoy (Stony Point, N.Y.) took the loss as he made three saves, before Jackson Burhans (Berlin, N.Y.) came on to make seven saves of his own.
After a back-and-forth start to the contest, Springfield finally broke the scoreless tie when Bolduc received a pass from Wayne Belcher (Norton, Mass.), and tucked a shot past McAvoy to give the Pride a 1-0 lead with 10:57 remaining in the first half. Just 6:27 later, the junior found the back of the net again, but this time he took a pass from Danny Murphy (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and beat his defender before blasting a shot past McAvoy to give the Pride a 2-0 lead at the break.
Springfield did not slow down in the second half, as just 13:13 into the stanza, Bolduc ripped a shot on cage, that was collected and converted by Gilfoy to make it 3-0, Pride, before Tim Wood (Derry, N.H.) set up Ian Zacharewicz (Stamford, Conn.) with a beautiful direct free kick, that the sophomore netted for his first-career goal.
With 2:04 remaining, Gilfoy set up senior forward Luke Alvaro (Chicopee, Mass.) for his first of the season, before Gilfoy notched his second of the game on a pass from Bolduc to finish off the 6-0 win.
Up next, Springfield will head to Western Connecticut State University on Sunday, September 4 for a matinee to begin at 1 p.m.
