Buzzards Bay, Mass. - April 13, 2019 - Springfield College's Lucas Habich (Little Silver, N.J.) erupted for five goals and four assists to lead the Pride to a 17-12 win at Mass. Maritime on Saturday afternoon in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) meeting.
The win improved Springfield to 5-8, 2-1 in conference play.
In addition to Habich's impressive nine-point day, Joe Hawley (Poulsbo, Wash.) handed out five assists to go along with two goals, while Jack Vail (Franklin, Mass.) produced four goals and two helpers. Zachary Schuette (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) also aided in the offensive outburst with a hat trick. Joseph Cameron (Stoneham, Mass.) dominated the face-off "X", going a remarkable 26-for-32 to go along with 16 ground balls, and Daniel Biesty (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) was credited with 11 stops in the win and aided in his efforts with a third-quarter goal. Despite being outshot 49-44 in the game, Springfield owned the ground ball battle with a 39-21 edge.
The Pride jumped out to a 3-1 lead just under five minutes into the contest, as Hawley buried a man-up strike off a look from Habich at the 10:24 mark. Springfield would push its advantage to 6-2 with 3:58 left in the opening quarter on a goal by Vail, and later use another marker from Hawley with 15 seconds remaining to take a 7-3 lead into the second quarter.
Habich pumped in consecutive strikes just 39 seconds apart midway through the second quarter to make it a 10-4 game, before a pair of Mass. Maritime goals would bookend two goals from Schuette as Springfield owned a 13-6 edge at halftime.
The Buccaneers would outscore Springfield 6-4 in the final 30 minutes of play, getting as close as four goals twice, including a 14-10. However, Vail and Habich scored at 9:14 and 7:33 of the fourth to push the Pride's lead back to 16-10. Mass. Maritime would score twice in the final four minutes before Habich sealed the win with his fifth of the game with 1:25 on the clock.
Springfield will host Coast Guard on Wednesday night at 7:30 in a rematch of last year's conference championship.
