Champaign, Ill. - April 19, 2019 - Four members of the Springfield College men's gymnastics team competed against the best in the country at the NCAA National Collegiate Championships in the State Farm Center at the University of Illinois on Friday afternoon.
In his second season at Springfield College, head coach Matt Davis had a total six student-athletes qualify for the NCAA Championships, marking the third-straight season that the Pride has five or more student-athletes earn the right to reach the national meet.
The Pride had a pair of student-athletes compete in the all-around competition in Stephen Lewis (Baltimore, Md.) and Trevor Lamberton (Willow Spring, N.C.), with Lewis taking seventh after posting a 76.833 and Lamberton finishing eighth after totaling a 70.164. Lewis put together a sensational showing on the vault, hitting for a 14.333 as he tied for 11th place and earned a spot in Saturday's individual finals. This marks the first time in Lewis' decorated career that he has reached the individual finals at the NCAA Championships, and the fourth time in the last six seasons that the Pride has had a student-athlete advance on.
Lewis, who earlier this month became the first Springfield College men's gymnast in program history to win the ECAC All-Around Championship twice, totaled a 13.200 on the floor, a 12.500 on the pommel horse, a 12.600 on the rings, a 12.000 on the parallel bars, and a 12.200 on the horizontal bar to go along with his standout mark on the vault. Lamberton's afternoon was highlighted by a 13.066 on the vault, as he also registered a 12.433 on the parallel bars, and 11.666 on the horizontal bar, a 12.366 on the floor, and 11.333 on the rings, and a 9.300 on the pommel horse.
Noah Candocia (Bradenton, Fla.) was credited with a 12.866 on the vault as he capped off a terrific freshman season at Springfield, while competing for the final time at Springfield College, Jannik Haas (San Jose, Calif.) represented the Pride on both the parallel bars and horizontal bar. The senior posted a 12.833 on the horizontal bar to finish tied for 22nd, while also posting an 11.933 on the parallel bars.
