Springfield, Mass.-February 8, 2015- Another impressive performance from junior Jon Zirna (East Amherst, N.Y.) helped pace the Springfield College mens gymnastics team to a first-place finish at the New England Invitational Championships at Blake Arena on Sunday evening.
Springfield, who registered 404.950 points, outlasted teams from MIT, SUNY Brockport, University of Vermont and Temple University to find themselves at the top of the podium come day's end.
Zirna placed second in the all-around after he posted a score of 82.350, while teammate Ian Stratton (Elizabeth City, N.C.) landed in the fourth spot with a 77.00 performance. The junior capped his second-place performance with a top slot on the parallel bars with a dominant 14.500.
Senior Andy Grabowski (Victor, N.Y.) led the way for the Pride with his floor routine as he posted a 14.400 in the runner-up slot, while teammate Joshua Dieker (Oviedo, Fla.) finished with a score of 13.700.
Springfield had an outstanding showing on the pommel horse, as the team posted an overall score of 71.45. Chris Graff (Old Bridge, N.Y.) led the way for the Pride with a 14.700, while Pat Ryther (Boston, Mass.) followed suit with a 14.500. Tucker McClure (San Jose, Calif.) and Brian Cogan (Fairfax, Va.) rounded out the top four for both the Springfield squad and the overall event. Graff also placed first on the rings with a 13.650.
As for the high bar, Zirna put up a 13.400 to take third, while Derek Taranto (Westborough, Mass.) and McClure rounded out the Pride's top three with 13.050 and 12.800 respectively.
Up next the Pride will play host to William & Mary on Sunday February 15th at 1:00 pm.
