Men's Gymnastics Opens Season at West Point Open

West Point, N.Y. - January 16, 2015 - The Springfield College men's gymnastics team opened up the 2015 campaign by finishing fourth as a team at the West Point Open on Friday evening.

Penn State won the overall team title of the 24th West Point Open after totaling 439.400 points, followed by Army's score of 416.150.  Navy placed third after posting a 409.200, followed by Springfield (405.300) and Temple (402.050).

Jon Zirna (East Amherst, N.Y.) had a strong start to his junior season, placing fifth in the all-around competition with a 79.600.  Zirna took third on the pommel with a mark of 14.600 and added a ninth-place finish on the parallel bars after registering a 14.300.

On the floor, Ian Stratton (Elizabeth City, N.C.) recorded a 14.200, while Sam Docherty (Upton, Mass.) hit a 14.050 on the vault to take eighth.

In his first collegiate meet, Joshua Dieker (Oviedo, Fla.) posted a team-best 13.550 on the rings, and Brian Cogan (Fairfax, Va.) added a score of on the high bar 13.350.

Springfield will conclude the West Point Open on Saturday evening during the individual portion of the competition.
