Springfield, Mass. - February 22, 2018 - Springfield College is excited to serve as host for the 2018 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Basketball Championship, hosted in Blake Arena on February 24-25.
The Pride, which is currently 18-7 on the year, will host the NEWMAC Championship for the first time in program history this weekend. Currently ranked sixth in the Northeast in the most recent NCAA Division III Regional Rankings, the Pride has won 14 of its last 16 outings and are 12-1 at home this season. The Pride finished the regular season with a 12-2 mark in conference play, marking their most NEWMAC regular-season wins in program history, as it earned its first-ever outright NEWMAC regular-season title.
Springfield will square off with WPI on Saturday, February 24 at 1 pm in the first semifinal. In their two meetings this season, Springfield posted an 86-67 decision on January 24 in Blake Arena before rallying to an 81-74 triumph in Worcester on February 14. WPI, which is the No. 4 seed in the tournament, advanced to the NEWMAC Championship Semifinals for the 15th-consecutive season after running away with a 95-76 victory over No. 5 Wheaton on Wednesday night.
In the second matchup of Saturday, Babson, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, will host third-seeded MIT at 3:30 pm. In their two regular-season meetings, the teams split a pair of overtime decisions, as MIT picked up an 80-78 win on the road on January 20 before Babson returned the favor with an 84-71 win in Cambridge on January 31.
The first 200 Springfield College students will receive free admission, while other ticket prices for the games are $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens, students are $1, and children 12 years old and under are receive free admission.
