Springfield, Mass. - September 10, 2016 - Freshman forward Taylor Conley (Yarmouth Port, Mass.) registered her first-career hat trick, as the Springfield College field hockey team hung on for a 5-3 win over Husson on Saturday morning at Stagg Field.
With the win, the Pride improves to 3-1 overall, while Husson falls to 1-3 on the year. Springfield College held a 26-21 shot advantage throughout the contest, while the Eagles held a 12-9 margin in penalty corners on the day.
In net, Springfield's Emmalie Drake (Pittsford, N.Y.) made six stops and was credited with the win, while Eagles' goalkeeper Kaitlin Dolloff (Richmond, R.I.) tallied nine saves in the defeat. Along with Conley's three goals, the Pride also received scoring from Emily Knobel (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Maggie Kennedy (Clay, N.Y.).
Husson got on the board just 4:21 into the contest when Taylor Lovley (Newport, Maine) sent in a penalty corner, which was stopped by Mikayla Toth (Skowhegan, Maine), before the junior found a cutting Lovley on the back post for an easy tip-in goal to make it 1-0, Husson, in the early stages of the game.
Springfield College knotted the contest at one goal apiece just 11:50 later, when Knobel gained possession of the ball outside of the arch, drove down the right side, and cranked a shot on the run into the left side of the cage to make it 1-1 midway through the first half.
With 4:29 remaining in the stanza, Springfield College earned another penalty corner, and Knobel sent a pass in to Conley on the wing, who ripped a shot through the legs of Dolloff to make it 2-1, before the freshman struck again when she picked up a rebound off of a shot from Jamie Raccosta (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) and found the back of the net to push the Pride's lead to a pair heading into the halftime break.
With 18:48 to play, Kennedy pushed the Pride's lead to three when she picked up the ball in transition, dribbled around the goalkeeper and put a shot on cage while diving that hit the upper part of the netting to make it 4-1, Springfield, midway through the second half.
Husson would cut its deficit to a pair with 15:41 remaining, when Kerianne Downing (Dedham, Mass.) sent in Sadie Royer (Green, Maine) all alone on Drake, who made an incredible diving save, but the rebound trickled over the line to make it 4-2, Springfield, in the late stages of the game.
Springfield College regained its three-goal lead with 9:18 remaining when Kennedy out ran her defender to catch up to a loose ball and fired a shot on cage, which was saved, but Conley controlled the loose ball in front and found the back of the net to complete here first-career hat trick.
Showing its resiliency, Husson closed the gap once again when Lovley set up Arika Brochu (Augusta, Maine) for a goal with 4:20 left to make it 5-3, but the Pride was able to hang on in the waning minutes of the game for its third win of the year.
Next up, Springfield College will travel to MIT on Saturday, Sept. 17 for a 1 p.m. contest with the Engineers.
