Football Hits the Road For Showdown at Union

Springfield, Mass. - October 6, 2016 - The Springfield College football team looks to earn its third victory of the season when it travels Union on October 8.  Game time is set for 12:00 pm.

Last week…

The Springfield College football team surrendered 21 points in the fourth quarter as it was defeated by nationally-ranked St. Lawrence, 42-14, on Saturday afternoon in Liberty League play. Joshua Thomas (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) totaled 26 yards on the ground and scored a touchdown, while Chad Shade (Pittsfield, Mass.) threw from 94 yards on four completions and also scored the Pride's other touchdown in his first collegiate start under center.   Defensively, Rich Williams (Wethersfield, Conn.) led Springfield with 11 tackles, while Kenny Calaj (Everett, Mass.) was credited with nine stops and returned an interception 66 yards.

A season ago…

The Springfield College football team notched a 20-17 win over Union College at Stagg Field in Liberty League action.  The Pride finished with 319 yards of total offense, including 276 on the ground as head coach Mike DeLong earned his 200th career victory.  Jake Eglintine (Gansevoort, N.Y.) carried the ball 20 times for 174 yards and a touchdown in his first career start at home, Blake Heller (North Bellmore, N.Y.) hit a pair of field goals in the second half, and  Joe Festo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) snagged a 33 yard touchdown.  Defensively, Dominic Traversa (Pittsfield, Mass.) made a team-best 10 stops, while Max Nacewicz (Sandy Hook, Conn.) registered eight stops, including 2.5 tackles-for-loss.  Springfield forced a pair of Union turnovers in the second half, including interceptions by Nick Welsh (Middletown, N.J.) and Joey Racioppi (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.).

All-time series vs. Union…

The two teams have met 19 times over the years, with Springfield holding a slight 10-8-1 advantage. The Pride have come out on top in two straight meetings with Union.

Union is 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the league. The Dutchmen lost to WPI last weekend, 21-14 as it surrendered 21 points in the second half.  Union is averging over 180 yards per game on the ground as its offense is averaing 18 points per game.
