Worcester, Mass. - April 12, 2019 - Behind a pair of RBI from graduate student Mark Joao (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) the Springfield College baseball team defeated Clark, 2-0, to open a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) West Division Series at Granger Field on Friday afternoon.
The Pride improves to 15-11 overall and 6-5 in NEWMAC play with the win, while Clark drops to 11-16 on the year, with a 3-8 mark against league opponents.
Freshman Brendan Kirck (Hamden, Conn.) got the nod and pitched 3.2 innings, giving up three hits, before Zach Kerr (Niskayuna, N.Y.) came on in the fourth and went for 3.1 frames, giving up just one hit. Duncan Satterlee (Albany, N.Y.) earned his second save of the year as he pitched the final 2.0 innings, giving up two hits and striking out one.
Springfield College opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to second base that scored Brandon Russo (Lisbon, Conn.) in the top of the first inning, before Joao laced a triple to right center field in the top of the sixth, which scored Cooney to give the Pride a 2-0 cushion.
From there, Kerr and Satterlee were able to keep the Cougars offense at bay as the Pride sealed the 2-0 win to open the series.
Next, the Pride will return to Archie Allen Field on Saturday, April 13 and will play a doubleheader with the Cougars beginning at 12 p.m.
